Food contact application

BC2 will unlock the use of rPP in food contact applications. BC2 is led by Vorwerk, a leading producer of small household appliances (SHA), among others cooking devices, such as multi-functional kitchen machines (e.g. cooking blenders).

Safe food contacts

In such SHA, there are important components which need to be food contact approved, such as bowls and mixer blades and the lid10. These components are typically made from PP. Moreover, safe food contact often needs to be guaranteed at elevated temperatures (up to 100°C) and in moist conditions. Currently, there is no food contact approved rPP available in the market. It is the aim of this business case to identify and overcome the hurdles to achieving food contact approved rPP and to initiate an EFSA approval.

It is the aim of this BC to identify and overcome the hurdles to achieving food contact-approved rPP and to initiate an EFSA approval for components containing this PCR. The extra driving questions to other WPs are: Which waste streams can be tapped that are min. 98% food grade in origins, preferably from a closed and controlled loop (traceability)? (WP1); What are the necessary pre-treatment (decontamination) steps? (WP2); What DfR guidelines are fit for these food contact components? (WP3); Is there a base for user acceptance of these components in recycled plastic and can targeted collection involving society provide better sourcing? (WP5); What is the relevant regulation and how might this need to be altered in order to achieve certified and food-safe rPP content (EFSA approval)? What is the cost-quality balance (TEA) (WP6)?
